I am New to Self-Hosting so I want to know Where Should I Begin with LinuxServer.io Containers?

Hey everyone,

I am new to the self-hosting world & I stumbled upon LinuxServer.io while exploring Docker containers for home use. The idea of running my own media server or tools such as Nextcloud sounds awesome but I am not sure where to start.

I have used Linux here & I am comfortable with the terminal. But when it comes to choosing the right container, setting it up properly & keeping everything updated, I still feel a bit lost. I have been doing some basic dev stuff and recently finished a CSM training online which got me even more interested in setting up tools for project management and automation at home.

Any beginner-friendly container suggestion? Maybe something simple for media streaming or self-hosted backups? I want to hear how others got started or what your go-to setup looks like.

Thank you…

This is a bit too open ended for a proper response, which is likely why it didn’t get one. This kind of chat would be better suited on discord. As to choosing the right container, if the people making it are people you trust (either by name/rep or by confirming the sourcecode) then you have your initial choice. as to specific containers, obviously use containers with apps you need/want.

as to updating and setting up, instructions are provided in the container readme for every container we make.

media streaming options are generally emby, kodi, jellyfin, or plex. we cant pick for you, try them all and see what you like.
