It’s currently a pain to set up, especially if you want to include auth, metadata, etc. I think there would be a lot of demand for this!

In trying to gain independence from Mozilla, I started looking into setting up my own sync server and discovered it would be complicated. It would be a real public service to create a reliable Docker image for this, but it might be a big challenge to maintain it.
Waterfox has on its roadmap for 2024:
“Implement own profile sync service. This is a hard complexity item and no guarantee of this.”
While I’m not sure we plan to as they’re currently transitioning the sync server to a rust alternative, this container works fine: GitHub - crazy-max/docker-firefox-syncserver: Firefox Sync Server Docker image
